Ever wanted to wander the plains of the Serengeti, frolic with lions and elephants? Africa has an rich culture and history from the northern tip of Algeria to whale watching in South Africa.
Whilst a trip to Africa as a whole might seem daunting to some, it should be noted that this vast continent, home to around a billion Africans has some surprises up its sleeve. If you’ve ever seen the film, The Lion King, your visions of Africa probably lean towards watching wildlife chase each other across the Serengeti while a gorgeous sun sets in the background.
Needless to say, there is a lot more to African than going on a safari. From the metropolis of cultures of South Africa and its awesome food and wine culture (check out Stellenbosch!), or the far north of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia for some French-infused culture, the Saharan dessert and the most incredible shouks (outdoor marketplaces) you’ll find anyway. And let’s not forget the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. The entire history of the country is somewhere to explore and get your hidden ‘Indiana Jones’ on.
A trip to the East African countries of Kenya and Tanzania is not only relatively safe, but offers an awesome combination of Arab, Indian and indigenous culture - a veritable melting pot of cultures. Oh, and some amazing coastline for the beach-lovers out there.
As always, be sure to check your countries foreign office travel advice before making plans as you’ll likely need visas, some vaccinations of course check to make sure the political and social situations are stable.
