Just Opened: 10 New Restaurants & Bars in Singapore – March 2016

From the Unlisted Collection’s modern Australian joint Cheek by Jowl to Gemmill Lane’s Italian-American restaurant Angeleno, and a cool, new rooftop bar at Suntec City, this month’s edition of Just Opened rounds up the best new restaurants and bars in Singapore to check out this month.

New Restaurants in Singapore

JINzakaya

Another Japanese concept by the Les Amis Group, JINzakaya is a new izakaya-style restaurant that harkens back to old train station taverns of Japan. Lunch-time sees affordably-priced set menus with choices of donburi, ramen, soba, sarada (salads), and sandwiches available. During dinner, diners can look forward to wide selection of yakimono items like Chicken Thigh ($2.50++ per skewer) or Foie Gras ($9.50++ per skewers), sashimi, and other sharing plates like salads and gyoza.

Cheek by Jowl

While the closure of Sorrel (one of the most anticipated openings of 2015) was unexpected, it set into motion the development of Cheek by Jowl, the latest restaurant to be assembled by the Unlisted Collection. Having enlisted the services of Chef Rishi Naleendra (formerly of Tetsuya’s in Sydney and MACA in Singapore), Cheek by Jowl will be dishing out modern Australian cuisine, so innovative dishes with a multitude of global influences is to be expected.

Angeleno

Coupled with other recent openings such as Bar-A-Thym and Gemmills Bar, the opening of Italian-American restaurant Angeleno on Gemmill Lane sees the area undergoing a culinary renaissance of sorts. Helmed by Chef Owner David Almany, who was part of the opening team of Osteria and Pizzeria Mozza at Marina Bay Sands, Angeleno sends diners on a sumptuous journey through the decadence of Californian-inspired Italiano nosh.

Summer Pavilion

Ritz-Carlton’s Summer Pavilion isn’t exactly a new restaurant, since it’s been doling out superb Cantonese cuisine for years, but its snazzy major makeover – along with significant menu changes – means we can chalk it up as a new opening. Ditching the stuffiness of traditional Chinese restaurants, the space has modernised and now features more natural light, classy furniture, and gorgeous new crockery, making for a pleasant dining experience.

Summer Pavilion is located at 7 Raffles Avenue, Singapore 039799, p. 6434 5286. Open Daily 11.30am-2.30pm, 6.30pm-10.30pm. Tea Salon is open daily 12pm-10pm.

Kontiki

Marina Bay’s Passion WaVe is PA Water-Venture’s latest flagship centre; and it’s also home to the newly opened marine-themed Kontiki. Sitting on the cusp of Tanjong Rhu, Kontiki offers views of the Marina Bay waterfront and a Western comfort food menu. The large al fresco area and laid-back vibes make this restaurant and bar family friendly and a great location to knock back an ice-cold beer or two.

Ramen Keisuke Lobster King

Restaurateur and Chef Keisuke Takeda has cemented his reputation as Singapore’s undisputed ‘Ramen King’. And opening Ramen Keisuke Lobster King in the party district of Clarke Quay is genius – everyone loves a bowl of piping hot ramen after a night of drinking…right? As the name of the outlet goes, look forward to creations like the Miso Lobster Broth Ramen ($14.90) and Spicy Miso Lobster Broth Ramen ($15.90).

SAHA Signature Indian Restaurant & Bar

Contemporary Indian restaurant SAHA has relocated from its Duxton site without much fanfare, so here’s hoping they’ll make a bigger splash with their new premises at National Gallery Singapore with new-to-industry partner Padang FNB. Headed by Chef Abhijit Saha, who also owns two award-winning restaurants in Bangalore, SAHA will serve modern Indian cuisine. The same folks also run The Altimate bar in the same space, which will be shaking up Asian and fruit-inspired cocktails.

New Bars in Singapore

13% Gastro Wine Bar

There’s no shortage of wine bars in Singapore, but that hasn’t stopped 13% Gastro Wine Bar from setting up shop in the Kampong Glam Conservatory Area. With Chef Geoffrey Weckx at helm in the kitchen and Sommelier Bruno Vaillant on service, 13% Gastro Wine Bar will carry labels from countries such as France and Lebanon, while munchies range are decided European, ranging from charcuterie to pizza, and even tartins.

Terra

Not to be confused with the fine-dining Tokyo Italian restaurant on Tras Street with the same name, Terra is a new rooftop bar at Suntec City by Limited Edition Concepts (the same people behind Club Kyo and hip hop venue Refuge). With Latin American tapas and botanical-inspired cocktails, this beautiful bar located within the mall’s Sky Garden also sports a great view of the CBD, making a great spot for a night out.

The Armoury Gastrobar

Joining Vatos Urban Tacos, Suite 26 and Vanity at The South Beach Hotel, The Armoury Gastrobar is the latest in a series of f&b openings by Massive Collective at the recently launched luxury property. Alcohol lovers will have a ball of a time at this homely establishment, with a carefully-curated selection of 15 premium craft beers served on tap, and an extensive list of excellent whiskeys and tasty bourbons on offer.
