Event Details

The Singapore Biennale, commissioned by the National Arts Council and organised by Singapore Art Museum (SAM), will return for its sixth edition from 22 November 2019 to 22 March 2020.
A teaser event on Saturday, 26 January 2019 during Singapore Art Week allows the public to have a sneak-peek at the event by featuring some of the artists in the Biennale line-up, including Dennis Tan (Singpaore/Japan), Vandy Rattana (Cambodia), Zai Tang (Singapore/UK) and Arnont Nongyao (Thailand).

Rundown of Singapore Biennale 2019 Teaser Event on 26 January 2019:
In Conversation: Singapore Biennale artist, Dennis Tan with SAM Curator, John Tung
SAM at 8Q Plaza | 4PM | Free with ticketed registration
The teaser event begins with a conversation between Singapore Biennale artist, Dennis Tan and SAM Curator, John Tung. Tan’s work involves rebuilding and racing a kolek, a traditional South-east Asian racing yacht.

Screenings: MONOLOGUE and Funeral by Vandy Rattana
SAM at 8Q, Level 2 Moving Image Gallery | 5PM | Free with ticketed registration
Followed by screenings of MONOLOGUE and Funeral by Vandy Rattana, the two works are set in Cambodia and centred around Khmer people that show a deeply personal side to the themes of loss, trauma, death and the afterlife.

The second artist to take part in the artist-curator talk will be Vandy Rattana from Cambodia, who will delve into his philosophical approach to art-making and the technicalities of producing films in a rapidly changing Khmer landscape.

Live Music Set: Zai Tang & Arnont Nongyao
SAM at 8Q Plaza I 7.30PM – 9PM | Free
The night will conclude with a live music set by sound artists Arnont Nongyao from Thailand and Britain-born, Singapore-based Zai Tang. They make use of a range of sounds, from field recordings of creatures in endangered Singapore habitats to audio recordings of weekly markets in the northern part of Thailand.
