Welcome to Maduro SG, a listening lounge and bar devoted to preserving the virtuosity of the classics. Fashioned after owner Mr. P’s storied musical past and present, #SaturdaysBest is a weekly Saturday residency that nods to Mr. P’s insistence to always put on his finest, crisp tux on the stage, as one would wear to church on Sundays. Here, a monthly artiste-in-residence is appointed to perform and curate the line-up every Saturday of the month, adding his or her own spin to the Maduro magic.

Helming most Saturdays in October (5, 12 & 19 Oct) and one in November (9 Nov) is Japanese jazz pianist Aya Sekine, Maduro SG’s Saturday’s Best resident for the month of October. No stranger to Singapore’s jazz scene, having laid roots here that date back more than 15 years, Sekine has played the role of educator, bandleader, composer and tireless grassroots activists – most days all at once.

A hard-swinging and eclectic jazz pianist strongly influenced by Bebop and straight ahead jazz, Sekine bears an openness that has no qualms collaborating with musicians across disciplines and of diverse backgrounds – a quality that lends itself to one of the most eclectic Saturday’s Best line-up to date. From leading power-kampong outfit The Jazz Djogets in an exclusive jazz set curated from their hotchpotch of 50’s to 70’s, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Malay Pop Yeh Yeh, Japanese City Pop, Dangdut and enchanting jazz standards, to inviting guests musicians across genres and borders to do their worse with her band each week, ensuring that each week’s performance takes on a life of its own.

New York City-based jazz saxophonist Eric Wyatt, local soul singer-songwriter veteran Michaela Therese, and a finale comprising some of Singapore’s best swinging improvisors are all on the roster – and together they will join Sekine in celebrating some of her finest originals, cross-disciplinary compositions, favourite jazz standards and anything #djogetable (danceable).

Admission is $35 per person (inclusive of one house pour spirit/wine). Maduro SG is located at 40C Harding Road, Level 3, Singapore 249548 (above ATOUT Restaurant) and open from 2pm to 2am every Saturday. For table reservations, please email [email protected] or call 65 9756 4775.
