City Nomads Radio: Haan

Spurred by an interest in vinyl records, Haan’s DJ-ing career began in 2008. In the last 8 years, Haan has made his way around Singapore’s club circuit with his groove-laden take on house and techno music. Describing his sound as dark yet melodic, Haan draws his inspiration from DJs/producers such as TIN MAN, Redshape and Dixon.
For this edition of City Nomads Radio, we chat with Haan on his musical influences, his involvement with Tropiclab and his new club nights.
Hi Haan, when and how did you start getting into DJing?
I started collecting vinyls, which naturally led me to messing around with turntables and before I knew it, I was hooked to the craft.
Who influenced your music?
I really look up to Xhin (Token, Stroboscopic Artefacts) and Kavan (MidnightShift). Both inspire me with their unique stand on music and have greatly influenced my sound today.
So, how exactly did you get involved with Tropiclab?
James and Thomas heard my set for a pop-up party, Hideout, that we were all playing for. They thought that my sound complemented TropicLab’s and offered me a spot shortly after. It has been great working with them so far.
Other than TropicLab, we heard you’ve started a couple of new nights, #ashtag and Left Bank. Tell us more.
I wanted to feature new/old djs who don’t get to play out often. Its also a platform for new djs to showcase themselves. I would say both nights serve the same purpose, just different names.
You’re resident at CBD underground club kyo, any DJs you would love to open for?
Redshape.
You’ve played fair share amount of gigs, which was the most memorable?
It was after playing for Super 0 Open Air Festival that everything started to escalate quickly, so yeah, I’ll never forget Super 0.
