Creative Working Spaces in Bali: Private Studios, Indonesian Craft Classes, and Co-Working

With the art scene in Bali growing beyond traditional dances and batik painting, creative spaces on the island are blooming up for so visitors can embark on creative journeys across the whole spectrum of craftsmanship. Here are a few happening hubs all around Bali with studio spaces, co-working, workshops and art programs that you can call home.

Genesis Creative Centre

Situated in the heart of Berawa, one of Canggu’s beachfront neighbourhood, Genesis has got all of you creatives covered for both personal and professional projects. Each of the four studios is dedicated to music, art, fashion and photography, and are well-equipped with tools suitable for beginners or semi-professionals. For instance, their Pioneer Music Studio makes it easier for you to produce your next podcast or DJ set with equipment like the Pioneer Toraiz Digital Sampler and Audio-Technica AT2020 Studio Microphones, while their Pondok Lensa Photo & Film studio boasts a cyclorama infinity wall, color paper roll backdrops, 42.2 megapixels full-frame Sony camera and a variety of lenses.

Genesis also houses a few Bali-based artists who run in-house art workshops including pottery, painting, and fashion design classes.

Arta Derau Ceramic Studio

Hidden somewhere in Petulu, Ubud, Arta Derau is the perfect place to get lost in paddy field landscapes, fresh air and ceramics. Owned and run by artist couple Sekarputi Sidhiawati and Agung Prabowo, it was once their home studio when they migrated from Bandung. Now it’s a serene ceramic studio and retreat available for bookings, whether you’re interested in Puti’s variety of daytime workshops (for adults and children) or a retreat to wind down and get creative at your own pace. The ceramic studio includes throwing wheels and kiln uses, studio tools and clay, while the retreat room by the semi-outdoor studio space overlooks the lush paddy fields.

Galeri Wastraku

The desire to discover the wide range of craftsmanship in Indonesian culture has led to the opening of Galeri Wastraku by Terry Wijaya Supit earlier this year. The theme of the gallery changes every few months and will showcase different brands and artisans that adhere to the same love for Indonesian cultures. Case in point, their opening exhibition was curated from the owner’s private collection of Indonesian tenun textiles and jewellery pieces entitled ‘Vol 1: La Tana Humba’ (The Land of East Sumba). The event also saw Sumbanese traditional dance performances , Pahudu textile weaving demonstration and the Sumbanese sirih pinang (betel nut) habitual. A number on creative workshops on Sumbanese rattan, accessories and textiles are said to be filling up Galeri Wastraku’s calendar in the near future, so make sure you stay tuned on Instagram for more updates!

AIR | Artist Inn Residency

A beautiful jungle Airbnb and a place to get on with that fun project you’ve been thinking of doing, AIR (Artist Inn Residency) Ubud runs a six-key hostel with artistically themed rooms. The Jungle View room overlooks the bonfire pit and tropical trees, while the Sky Eye room and the Parallel Universe room that are within the studio area and kitchen. Those looking for a separate kitchen and living room can opt for the Artist Apartment. The open communal space, alongside the semi-outdoor high-ceiling white studio space and art studio equipment seem to attract fellow creatives, travelers, dreamers from around the world.

Kinship Studio Bali

Set in an old garment factory, Kinship Studio is a multifaceted creative space with private studios, co-working offices, a meeting room, and a café by Ruko. One of the pioneers of contemporary creative spaces in Bali, they offer daily, weekly or monthly passes to suit the needs of the community and also run workshops, events, exhibitions, and skill-sharing evenings from 8am to 8pm daily AM to 8 PM daily. Evening activities open to public here include guided meditations, business courses, live figure drawing, and art exhibitions, while paying members get access to weekly yoga sessions and the use of the private studio space. Their photography studio is the only one in Bali with Broncolor equipment too!

Kinship Studio is located at Gang Jalak VI B, Canggu Permai.
