10 Questions with Trus’me

His love for music was born at an early age by dabbling with various instruments and developing a passion for vinyl but Prime Numbers‘ label boss, Trus’me also known as David Wolstencroft, truly found his calling after learning the art of mixing and sample digging. Not one who concern himself with fads and trends, his concept album ‘Planet 4‘ which was released in late May 2016, had tunes that are funky, glitchy, mysterious and raw and reads like a tale about human life on Mars.
In hopes of unearthing a few new facts about Trus’me, we asked the English artist to withstand a barrage of queries while we gear up for his return at the kyo’s basement on Saturday, 11 March 2017.
Where were you born and raised?
Madchester the home of Haçienda, Joy Division, New Order, Factory Records, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses… the list is endless. You know the city, the one that gave you a shit load of music.
Where do you call home now and how do you like it?
Berlin, the home of Berghain a small slice of the sounds that I love, but I do miss my musical home at times. But times change and music moves on, and right now Berlin is the Hollywood for DJs.
3. What is the most important record in your collection?
Impossible question to ask, I have whittled and sold out all the excess and pointless records in my collection. I only keep records I truly love, mainly cause the missus threatened me with an axe if I didn’t get rid of some. I love so many genres but if you were to say in electronic music, it has to be The Other People Place – Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café.

4. What’s the most exciting thing you’ve received in the mail this year?
I’m like a kiddie at Christmas every time a record arrives in Berlin, which in fact doesn’t happen much technically. Most Berlin postmen stick a card in your postbox and ask you to pick it up. Things you have to adjust to in a new city.
5. If you could go back to back with literally anyone (non-DJs included), who would it be?
Prince, imagine that! He must have so many off the cut electronic records he made, and I know because I’m collecting most of his mysterious monikers and strange collaborations. He could break out on the mic too, true MC right there.
6. What’s something you’ve never done or tried that you’re curious to experience?
Stand-up comedy, I’d love to put a string of ideas together, develop a routine and just see how badly I would be heckled. Would I really be as bad as people say when I tell them that aspiration?
7. What is your favourite: breakfast, lunch, or dinner?
As we are in Singapore, I’ll tell you what a usual day consists of – Teban Gardens for Prata and Teh Tarik, Green Pastures at Fortune Centre for Soba Salad and round things off at East Coast Food Village for an array of Sambal Stingray, sambal kangkong and Katong Laksa and more.
8. Other than music, what else do you dabble in?
I run food events too, mainly pushing gourmet British food in Berlin and other cities in Europe, themed with ‘one-deck vinyl’ sessions where famous electronic DJs can spin their private collection.
If your music was an animal, what would it be?
A giraffe because music is on a higher level, ha jokes!
What is the meaning of life?
People who ask that question, have never been in love.
